Re:Creators | Anime Review

This review is SPOILER-FREE.

As a lover of fictional worlds and stories, I’ve always wondered what would happen if the characters living in them found out that the life they live isn’t actually “real”. What would they feel? And if they could meet their creators, what would they do?

Imagine what it would be like if anime characters came to the real world and found out that they’re nothing but fictional beings, with their lives being on display for our own entertainment.

Interesting, right? Well, then I present to you an anime whose whole premise is exactly that: Re:Creators.

Story

The anime follows a Japanese high school boy, Mizushino Souta, who gets caught up in unusual events involving the arrival of fictional characters from anime and videogames, referred to as the Creations, in the real world. These occurencess allowed the fateful meeting between the Creations and their own authors or creators, as well as pose a threat to the balance of reality.

The series has an interesting premise that seems to be the main selling point of the show. It introduces a scenario in which characters from fictional stories finds out that everything they knew, their whole lives, was nothing more than just a product of someone’s imagination.

It also explores the moral implications of making fictional characters go through suffering. Is it morally wrong to have your characters in a made-up story undergo horrible circumstances? Does morality even apply in this case? These are the questions that the anime seeks to ask its audience and, at some point in the series, attempts to give a satisfactory answer to.

Characters

The anime has a variety of characters, but those that stood out the most were the Creations which are largely derived from common anime tropes.

It includes a katana-wielding fighter who commands an ancient spirit like in Shaman King, a heroic female knight from a dark fantasy world, a magical girl from a shoujo anime, a boy who drives an enormous robot from a Mecha anime, a wise librarian mage from a fantasy videogame, and many more.

The Creations have distinct personalities that reflects the kind of story or world they came from. This results in an interesting dynamic between themselves, as well as between them and their own creators.

Art & Animation

The character designs for the various Creations fits well with their diverse backgrounds and unique abilities. It really gives off the impression that each of them are prominent characters from their own worlds.

As an action-packed anime, the animation did not disappoint. The integration of CGI during specific battles blended well with the general animation of the series and produced some pretty decent fight scenes.

Final Thoughts & Rating

Re:Creators is an entertaining fiction meets reality story that I enjoyed from the beginning till the end. It’s a good series that long-time anime fans, who are familiar with the shows the Creations are based off of, may appreciate. However, for those new to anime, I’d still recommend this if you find it interesting.
