SYNOPSIS. Set in the town of Lawless, a boy named Angelo Lagusa witnessed the murder of his parents and younger brother at the hands of the Vanetti mafia family. As the only survivor, he leaves his hometown and changes his identity to Avilio Bruno.

But seven years later, he returns to Lawless after he received a mysterious letter that gave him the chance to exact his revenge. There he meets the son of Don Vanetti, Nero, and befriends him. This was the start of his infiltration of the organized crime group to kill off every single person involved in his family’s murder.

REVIEW. 91 Days is basically a story about revenge. But it doesn’t make revenge look cool or heroic, instead the anime portrays it as a cold and bloodstained path that Avilio must take if he seeks to avenge his murdered family.

The series doesn’t shy away from showing the gruesome reality of its world as it depicts the horrible things people are capable of. Although the violence in the show is graphically minimal, the implied twisted acts committed are still messed up.

The plot is pretty interesting, but the pacing can feel slightly slow as sometimes certain episodes may seem like it’s drifting away from the main narrative. Its storytelling makes it feel a bit convoluted, so you’ll have to pay attention a lot to the dialogue and such in order not to miss any relevant details being thrown around.

Since it is mostly plot-driven, there’s not much character development for any of the casts in the series. And because it’s about the Mafia, there’s a lot of characters being introduced which are unfortunately largely forgettable. However, the lead characters are fairly decent and the dynamic between them work well for the storyline.

Also, despite it involving the Mafia and their criminal activities, the action in the show isn’t too crazy. It seems the anime is more focused on its narrative and less on the fighting. Still, the series does have some pretty solid action scenes. And, yes, it’s a complete show, but it does end on an open ending. I didn’t mind it, but I know it’s not for everyone. So, heads up for that.

CONCLUSION. Overall, the anime is interesting and entertaining. If you’re into revenge stories and/or a fan of shows revolving around the Mafia, then this series is one I recommend for you to try. I gave it a score of 7/10 on MyAnimeList (MAL). For similar recommendations, check out:

  • Vinland Saga — Set in the Viking era, the story is also a bit about revenge and its portrayal of it is similar with 91 Days. However, this anime has a lot more action and is more than just a revenge story.
  • Ikebukuro West Gate Park — Although it doesn’t revolve around revenge, this anime does involve gangsters and a protagonist that acts as a mediator in their disputes. It might be something you’ll find interesting.

Thanks for reading!!
